Jamie St. John Bamber Griffith, was born on April 3, 1973 in Hammersmith, London. His father, Ralph is an American. His mother, Elizabeth is Irish and she trained as an actress. He has 5 brothers and one sister. His younger sister is actress Anastasia Griffith. The family lived in France for Jamie's first few years. He attended a bilingual school there until the family moved back to England when he was eight.
Jamie's first part was that of a woman! He played the wicked witch in the "Wizard of Oz" at school - his hair was probably long at the time. Jamie was educated at the independent St Paul's School in Barnes, London, and received a first class honours degree in Modern Languages (Italian and French) at St John's College, Cambridge, before attending the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA).
He speaks French and Italian fluently, - and if he took his role as Archie Kennedy really serious - a little Spanish. After leaving LAMDA, Jamie almost immediately got his first part, the role of Archie Kennedy in the glorious, dashing and daring adventures of "Hornblower".
Between filming the episodes of "Hornblower", Jamie had a small but memorable part in "The Scarlet Pimpernel" , playing Lord Tony Dewhurst. But his character was shot, but not before he showed us his bum! After Hornblower and Pimpernel, he played in an episode of "Poirot, the Murder of Roger Ackroyd" - in which he disappears a lot - and in "Lady Audley's Secret" - in which he waves his hair around a lot, and disappears again!
The producers of "Hornblower" were bombarded with letters from Jamie's fans to continue the part of Archie in the new episodes and they did... His performance was a major success, but Archie dies, so that was sadly the end of that too.
He had a role in "Band of Brothers" a series about WW II directed by Steven Spielberg which has been aired on HBO and the BBC. He played Lt. Jack Foley. Jamie finished "Band of Brothers" and went on to film a movie in Scotland called "The Devils Tattoo" aka "Ghost Rig". That's where he met Kerry Norton. Next came a part in British series "Peak Practice".He was playing Doctor Matt Kendal but "Peak Practice" was ending after 12 seasons.
His next role put him back in uniform, only this time it's modern uniform, as a member of a crack SAS team in the 6 part series "Ultimate Force" for ITV.
After Ultimate Force, Jamie had the role of Hans Meyrick in the BBC production of George Eliott's "Daniel Deronda". Upon completing "Daniel Deronda", Jamie took on the very challenging role of Prince Hal in the Bristol Old Vic's production of Shakespeare's "Henry IV". Fans from all over the world made the journey to wish Jamie well in professional stage debut.
In 2003, Jamie starred as the handsome, rugged, determined Lee 'Apollo' Adama, a Captain in the Colonial Fleet, in the re-imagined "Battlestar Galactica". This miniseries effectively served as pilot for a potential TV show. A TV series was commissioned in a collaborative effort between the Sci Fi Channel (United States) and Sky TV (the British broadcaster). The Peabody Award-winning series was filmed mostly in Vancouver, British Columbia and aired its final episode on March 20, 2009.
Los Angeles became Jamie's home, though he spent a lot of time in Vancouver, Canada filming "Battlestar Galactica". He moved to L.A. with his family and bought a house in Studio City.
In the role of Lee Adama, Jamie notably speaks with an American accent. He also has darkened hair, in an effort to more closely resemble Edward James Olmos, who plays his character's father. Reciprocally, Olmos wears contact lenses with blue irises to match Jamie's eyes.
Between filming the episodes of "Battlestar Galactica", Jamie had three guest starring roles in the series "Cold Case" (2007) as Jack Kimball , "Ghost Whisperer" (2007) as Bryan Curtis and "The Last Detective" (2007) as Luke. In addition, he had a leading role in the horror film "Pulse 2: Afterlife" (2008) as Stephen.
Jamie is now back in London for filming "Law & Order: UK". He live with his wife and children in Richmond and said only recently in a interview, "I could happily live in Richmond for the rest of my life if I knew the work was always coming in...".
"Law & Order: UK" it's the UK version of the long-running U.S. TV drama that tells the stories of two separate yet equally important groups: the police, who investigate crime; and the attorneys, who prosecute the offenders. Jamie plays the cheeky and charming DS Matt Devlin, an instinctive copper - his policing radar is second to none.
For Jamie returning to film on the streets of London where he grew up was a highlight of filming new ITV drama Law & Order: UK. He said: "I loved filming in Holborn Station in the rush hour buzz, I have never filmed on the street before in throbbing vibrant centres and that is what makes the job exciting."
During his Battlestar Galactica time till today Jamie has made a few photo shoots among others with Karen Hill, Frank Duval, Richard Phibbs, Florian Schneider, Howard Webster, Jillian Edelstein ... and Dennys Ilic. His Fans love the photos. Not only is he handsome but very smart too! I had the pleasure to meet him on the Fed Con XVII in Bonn/Germany last year. He is really a very, very nice guy and a true gentleman.
